The capital of the Pays d’Auge, this town has kept some remains after World War II : the Cathédrale St.Pierre was one of the first gothic churches built in France, under Bishop Arnoult( 1170-1182).
The Basilica (1929) is an important pilgrimage centre, and was erected by order of Pius XI in the honour of Ste. Thérèse de Lisieux, canonized in 1925 . Her birthplace, Les Buissonnets, is open to the public, as well as the chapel of the Carmel order.
